There were more reports of devastating health impacts (of consuming meat). In May, The World Cancer Research Fund advised limiting meat consumption to reduce the risk of bowel cancer. The August issue of The Lancet projects that, on the current meat-based diet, half of the U.S. population will be obese by 2030.
Last August, salmonella contamination forced world-largest meat processor Cargill to recall 36 million pounds of ground turkey. University of Florida places the national financial burden of pathogens in meat products at $4 billion.
Then there were cruelty exposes. A March undercover investigation of the E6 Cattle Company in Texas showed workers bashing cows’ heads with pickaxes and hammers.
In November, ABC News publicized atrocious egg production conditions at Iowa’s Sparboe Farms. Bills attempting to criminalize such investigations were defeated in Iowa, Minnesota, Florida, and New York.
Accordingly, USDA projects that Americans will consume 12.2 percent less meat in 2012 than in 2007.
Every one of us can welcome this trend by resolving to cut our meat consumption in 2012. Entering “live vegan” in our favorite search engine brings recipes and tons of other useful information.

Let's do the math....12,000 wards currently in the US...say back in the 1960's there were 8000 wards. Each ward was allowed to exempt 1 Mormon Draftee every 6 months to go on a "mission" instead of serving in the Military.
8000 x 2 Mormon Draftees = 16,000 Mormon Draftees were given deferrments per year time 4 years that the Draft was in force = 64,000 Mormon Draftees never had to serve their Nation during a time of War.
It also means that 64,000 "Gentiles" (Catholics, Protestants, Greek Orthodox, Baptists, Anglicans, Episcopalians and your plain old Atheists).........had to be .."DRAFTED IN THEIR PLACE".
Out of those 64,000 "Gentiles" (non-Momons)...who had to be drafted to fill the empty place.....how many were killed in Vietnam...how many were wounded...how many came home with P.T.S.D., and most sadly = how many of these 64,000 "Replacements" were POW'S...how many "Gentile" Moms and Dads never saw their sons again....how many of these "Replacements" became empty chairs at the Thanksgiving and Christmas Table.....OF THE 64,000 RELACEMENT "GENTILE" DRAFTEES.....FILLING THE BOOTS OF THE MORMON DRAFTEES WHO WERE DEFERRED FROM SERVING THEIR COUNTY SO THAT THEY COULD GO ON A MORMON "MISSION" ???
As for my service.....I have an Honorable Discharge Certificate hanging up on my wall,,,it states that....."This certificate is awarded as a testimonial of Honest and Faithful Service". I was also awarded two Certificates of Achievement by the Commanding Generals of the two Commands that I served in and passed the MOS test for my job area. Worked my skinny (back then anyway....lol) patootie off in my 3 years.

P.S. Leon,
The topic here is eating meat, not avoiding service in the military. Just where and when did you serve? And do you eat meat?

Leon,
"Running away," you say. I had LDS highschool classmates who died in Vietnam. During those years, me Mormons had a largely self imposed quota on mission service. Only one missionary from each congregation each six months. Both were interested in mission service but did not get a quota. Both served willingly after being drafted. Both died there. I like to think they are serving their missions now in the afterlife. But for my father's having lost his defense industry job and our having to move, I would not have had a quota myself. After returning from my two years, I joined Army ROTC and served during the war, too. So don't paint the picture you see. You know nothing about service in Vietnam that I and my fellow soldiers also came to know.
My eldest brother died during Vietnam while serving in the Navy. His anti-submarine Orion P2V crashed in Okinawa when an airtraffic controlled misguided it into a mountain side. What sent him there? False reports of Russian submarines in the Gulf on Tonkin. So he was a Vietnam era casualty whose name was not placed on the list of 50,000 casualties of war, except for one memorial, the one at his alma mattar, BYU!

Look in mirror...open mouth...notice four pointed spear-like teeth on the corners = canine teeth. God gave us "canine" teeth to tear flesh....eat meat not carrots.
As for Mormon tenants..the previous commentor hit the nail on the head when he said.... "HYPOCRITES" ..how about......A MORMON TENENT ABOUT SERVING YOUR NATION DURING WAR TIME...... INSTEAD OF RUNNING AWAY ON MISSIONS TO PARIS, FRANCE, LIKE ROMNEY DID IN THE 1960'S.
Now here he is asking the same men that he did not have the "GUTS" to serve alongside with........TO VOTE FOR HIM TO BE ....COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF..........give me a break.

Ironically, my fellow Mormons and I preach to eat meat sparingly, and only in winter or in times of famine. But we eat meat like it's going out of style pretty much year round. We truely are hypocrites when it come to this tenant of our faith! Surely we can do much better!
