We should have seen this coming from the Soviets
Imagine if Mexico was the Ukraine and the elected Mexican government was overthrown by a coup (as happened in the Ukraine), and the Soviet Union kept developing treaties with nations closer and closer to the U.S., and the Mexican government now wants an alliance with the Soviet Union.
Nations have long memories, especially of the reverses they suffer during difficult times. As George Kennan, the “father” of America’s successful containment of the Soviet Union, stated in 1998 as NATO kept expanding alliances closer and closer to the former Soviet Union: “I think it is the beginning of a new cold war. I think the Russians will gradually react quite adversely and it will affect their policies. I think it is a tragic mistake. There was no reason for this whatsoever, no one was threatening anybody else. This expansion would make the Founding Fathers of this country turn over in their graves. We have signed up to protect a whole series of countries, even though we have neither the resources nor the intention to do so in any serious way.”
