They’re BAAAACCK! It’s our annual political sign season and the self-serving politicians will be busy posting ugly candidate signs by the thousands all over our city controlled easements at most intersections.

We don’t have to put up with the mess, because their signs are illegal according to state law ARS 9-500.14, forbidding ANY electioneering on government controlled property. The violators say they can because all candidates are allowed to advertise without city favoritism. The law doesn’t say that! It says NO electioneering. Unless citizens complain to their city councils, it will continue. So make the call and help get rid of the ugly signs.

Or a few of us could get together this weekend (and have several copies of ARS 9-500.14 on hand) and start removing signs. And at least one person with a video camera!

This is a open letter to all politicians, Shootist would be willing to remove your signs at no cost, not that they would mean any harm or disrespect to the candidates, but your singns would be great for target practice, this way you will get twice the use from your signs.

"Notwithstanding this section, a city or town may distribute informational reports on a proposed bond election as provided in section 35-454."

What do you suppose that means?

The campaign signs can be annoying, but I don’t see what anyone can do about it.

Come on now....give me a break....who gives a rat's patootie about corner election signs? Like we have beautifully landscaped, flowering corners to look at any way.

Some one has to make the paper or plastic that these signs are made from = JOBS.

Some one has to put these signs together = JOBS.

Some one has to go around in the middle of the night putting these signs in place = JOBS.

Some one has to replace these signs when the Haboobies come = JOBS.

These signs should not be looked at as eyesores by the Volvo or Toyota Hybrid (isn't that what the Independents drive around in now that Saabs are history....[wink]

There should be an escrow account posted by the politicians that is held pending removal of the signs AFTER the election. If they are not removed the funds can be paid as a bounty on a per sign basis when they are removed and turned in for recylcling.

Give you a break, california leon... not on your life. Grab a spray can and start tagging the signs. You can get your usual hate message our that way.

socratties ... escrow account would be a good idea. Only make the candidates pay by having the sign companies put up the escrow and they would add it to the cost of the signs.

Make it $1 per sign exta dedicated to an escrow account and if the candidate wants his money back after the election his campaign workers can go bring the signs in.

If they don't within 7 days after the election -- it is OPEN SEASON and anyone can retrieve the signs and turn them in and collect the bounty.

Leon, the signs often obscure people's vision when they are trying to pull into an intersection or make a turn. The campaign workers put them where they obstruct people's vision deliberately because they want to make sure the sign gets seen as much as possible.

socs I really like your idea of an escrow fund that anyone can collect if the candidates don't bring the signs back themselves.

sockratties ... the down side of an escrow for signs is that people would steal the signs and hold them until OPEN SEASON and then turn them in.

Still ok by me cause it gets the darn things out of sight.
