The man suspected of raping a woman last week in her car in a Gilbert parking lot was arrested Tuesday. Manuel Pinedo Garai, 28, of Gilbert was booked into jail on suspicion of sexual assault.
The woman was sleeping in her car at 3:30 a.m. Saturday behind the businesses at Heritage Square, in the 200 block of North Gilbert Road, when she awoke to find a man on top of her, police said.
She was able to persuade the man to leave the car. She recognized him as a frequent customer at a downtown Gilbert bar, police said.
Garai was arrested at his home, near the crime scene.
