The Maricopa Association of Governments is calling for an eight-lane Loop 202 running 22 miles and connecting Chandler with west Phoenix.

MAG transportation director Eric Anderson said the cost of the connector is an estimated $1.9 billion. Construction wouldn't begin until 2017.

Earlier, MAG planners had proposed a 45-mile-per-hour parkway for the section of the proposed South Mountain Freeway through the Ahwatukee Foothills and part of the South Mountain preserve. Prior to that, a 10-lane freeway was in the works.

Some Ahwatukee residents don't want the extension running through their community. They fear a Loop 202 extension will create noise, air pollution and possibly harm wildlife in South Mountain Park.
