Introduction to bird-watching

This beginning bird-watching class is perfect for those wanting to get into the hobby. Learn the fundamentals of bird appreciation and how to identify various species.

This six-week class meets on Mondays, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., beginning Aug. 31 in the library classroom at the Southeast Regional Library, 775 N. Greenfield Road. There will also be four weekend field trips. The registration fee is $50.

Wildlife garden experience

Explore and work in the wildlife gardens of the Riparian Preserve, 2757 E. Guadalupe Road, with plant biologist Jennie Rambo.

Hear about how the preserve maintains a healthy and diverse environment. Learn how you can use similar techniques in your own home garden.

The event is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Adult recreational basketball leagues

Registration opens Monday for teams that would like to participate in the fall session of the adult recreational basketball league.

Divisions for men’s and women’s teams are available.

All teams must submit a completed roster of between five and 15 players to the Community Services Department, 90 E. Civic Center Drive, by Sept. 4 to be included. League fees are $540 per team.

Men’s league games will be played at Greenfield Junior High School, 101 S. Greenfield Road, and women’s league games will be played at South Valley Junior High School, 2034 S. Lindsay Road. Game times will vary depending on division.

Charity golf tournament

Hit the links Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for this golf event designed to benefit the Gilbert Police Department. The tournament will include prizes, music, raffles and more. The $75 registration will include green fees, a golf cart, range balls, breakfast and lunch.

Recreation classes available

Looking to get the kids out of the house? Interested in picking up a new skill? Registration is open for a fall slate of Gilbert recreational classes.

Take a look at the wide variety of activities offered by the town at the Freestone Recreation Center, 1141 E. Guadalupe Road. Dance, sports, education, fitness and martial arts are just a few of the courses offered. Registration fees and starting dates vary.

'Beauty and the Beast’ stage show

The Hale Centre Theatre will present the award-winning stage show “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” through Saturday.

The theater is located at 50 W. Page Ave. Ticket prices are $23 for matinees and $25 for evening shows.

Tuesday time travel

Kids ages 5 to 9 are invited to learn about the culture and history of ancient Rome.

Several hands-on activities will highlight this free presentation scheduled for 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Southeast Regional Library, 775 N. Greenfield Road. Space is limited and advance registration is required for the event.
