Two people, both in their 70s, were killed leaving their senior living community on Saturday when they pulled out into the path of a company van from a nearby auto dealership, driven by another man in his 70s.
The couple, whose names were not released, were pronounced dead about 1 p.m. at the scene near Higley and McKellips roads. The man was 79 and the woman 74, authorities said.
Mesa police spokesman Sgt. Ed Wessing said the pair were trying to turn left out of the Sunrise Village neighborhood with their Buick Century into the moderate afternoon traffic on McKellips.
However, they turned into the path of the van, driven by a 75-year-old employee of Honda of Superstition Springs, and were T-boned, said Wessing.
“There was nothing that Honda van could have done to avoid the collision,” he said.
The names of the people involved in the collision were not released Saturday.
The driver of the van suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol played a role in the crash. McKellips was closed between Higley and Recker Road for the investigation.
