Gilbert will be doing its part Saturday to make sure the public knows the meaning of the Constitution.

"During the last couple decades the knowledge of the Constitution has been lost," said former Town Councilman David Petersen. "We hope to inspire people to learn more about it, care about it."

History will take place at the free Constitution Fair at

Mesquite High School, where retiring U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, an Arizona native, will give the oath of citizenship to 54 people from 17 nations, including Bosnia, China, Germany and Mexico.

Patriotism will be everywhere all next week, as the town focuses for the fourth year on honoring and learning about this nation’s most basic law during Constitution Week.

Fair visitors will be able to walk through replicas of Independence Hall, the Supreme Court building, the White House and even the Washington Monument made of canvas and spay paint. Inside will be pictures and stories about the Founding Fathers and history.

"When you walk on the field, you think you’re looking right at Independence Hall," said Barbara Stowell, cochairman of the Constitution Week committee, which organized the annual tradition.

Nearby, a memorial wall will honor 59 Arizona soldiers who’ve died in Iraq. A replica of the Liberty Bell will be borrowed from the state Capitol.

Children also can participate in games and activities.

At 7 p.m., sky divers will drop onto the main football field. Then at 8 p.m., the main program begins with a performance by the Arizona Mormon Choir and Orchestra and speeches by O’Connor and Arizona Supreme Court Justice Ruth McGregor.

The Tribune will have a booth, where visitors can meet Executive Editor Jim Ripley, columnist Slim Smith, Gilbert reporter Beth Lucas and Gilbert schools reporter Jackie Leatherman.
