Tempe police have released a sketch of a man wanted in the stabbing of a security guard at a Mill Avenue bar in March.

Also, Silent Witness has posted a reward of $1,000 for any information leading to the arrest or indictment of this person.

The victim, 39-year-old Edmond Smith, remains in critical condition.

Police describe the man they seek as black, in his early 20s, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, wearing a white T-shirt over a red long-sleeved shirt and blue jeans.

According to police, on March 21 the man had leaned into the private patio area of La Pita Bar and Grill, 505 S. Mill Ave., when Smith asked him not to.

The man got angry and punched Smith, starting a fight.

During the melee, the man used a black-handled kitchen knife to stab Smith twice, once in the arm and once in the chest.

He then fled, possibly with a light-skinned black man in his early 20s. The man may have been seen later on the nearby Arizona State University campus.

Anyone with information about this incident or the man is encouraged to call Tempe police at (480) 350-8311 or Silent Witness at (480) 948-6377.
