An 81-year-old man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries on Tuesday moments after his scooter struck the side of a pickup truck whose driver left the scene without calling authorities after checking on the driver as he was lying in the road, according to Mesa police.
Donald James Reid was traveling eastbound on McKellips Road from Val Vista road on a three-wheeled motor-scooter about 4 p.m. when he began slumping on his seat, according to witnesses, and he veered into the next lane where he struck the side of the truck, police said. Reid, who suffered cuts and a broken hip, was ejected from the scooter before it continued rolling down the road and struck a tree.
He was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital, where he was listed in critical condition late Wednesday, according to a hospital spokesman.
Witnesses saw the man get out of his white pick-up truck and look at the injured man before leaving the area without seeking aid or summoning authorities, according to police.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident, and the description of the driver in the pickup truck is not available at this time.
