A family of four was bruised and battered when their sport utility vehicle went into a Gilbert canal, but no one suffered life-threatening injuries Sunday.

According to Capt. Mike Connor, Gilbert fire spokesman, one or both of the parents were able to get their two children, ages 3 and 1, out of the SUV, which ended up on its wheels in about 3 to 4 feet of water.

Connor said the use of seat belts and properly installed child seats helped to minimize their injuries.

The Toyota 4Runner was eastbound at about 6:45 p.m. on Pecos Road, just east of Recker Road, when the husband began coughing excessively and blacked out, Connor said.

The SUV crossed the median and oncoming lanes of traffic before going into the canal.
