A former airport screener from Apache Junction was sentenced Thursday to one year of probation for her attempt at smuggling a prescription drug to her jailed husband.
According to the U.S. attorney for Arizona, detention officers caught Shandie R. Dove Varela, 31, handing two Clonazepam tablets to Jesus R. Varela, during a September 2005 visit at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, while he was serving time for a federal drug conviction. Clonazepam is used for treating vertigo and exaggerated skin tenderness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Dove Varela worked for the Transportation Security Administration at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport at the time, but has since resigned.
