Police talked with a woman late Monday who said she is the mother of a little boy who was found Sunday night at a Mesa indoor amusement park.
Police wouldn’t release the woman’s name and were still trying on Monday night to determine if she is the mother of a 5-year-old known only as Adam, who was found at Amazing Jake’s Food & Fun, 1830 E. Baseline Road, about 10 p.m.
The child told authorities that he had come to the amusement park with his family, but couldn’t provide additional details, such as his last name or parents’ names, police said. He was likely with eight to 10 other people.
Mesa police spokesman Detective Chris Arvayo said that an investigation into continuing, and that it’s too early to know if investigators will recommend criminal charges in the case.
“Right now we’re trying to look at the possibility if this was a family mix-up,” Arvayo said.
However, police said they’re going to require the woman to produce documents to prove that Adam is her son.
Arvayo also said that Adam will remain in a Child Protective Services group home until an investigation is completed and the agency reaches a custody decision.
“We don’t feel comfortable having someone come in, saying this is what happened and then letting someone go,” Arvayo said.
Police released a photo and description of Adam on Monday and in the afternoon received a call from the woman who said she is the boy’s mother. Also, detectives reviewed surveillance videos and found two possible vehicles related to the boy’s family.
Arvayo said further information wasn’t available late Monday night because detectives were still interviewing the woman.
