TUCSON - A teenager has been arrested after an 8-year-old Tucson boy was shot in the head.
Tucson police said the shooting occurred Monday afternoon.
Johnathan Jesse Muniz, 18, turned himself in to police a few hours after the shooting, Sgt. Mark Robinson said.
After hearing news reports about the shooting, Muniz called 911, Robinson said.
Muniz was taken to a police station, and charges against him were unavailable late Monday.
The 8-year-old was playing with his 4-year-old brother in his grandparents' backyard when he was shot in the head, Robinson said.
Around 2 p.m., dispatchers received an unknown trouble 911 call. When dispatchers called back, they were told the boy had fallen off a swing and needed medical attention, Robinson said.
Paramedics arrived and found that the boy had been hit by a bullet, Robinson said.
Police said they believe Muniz shot a rifle from a nearby backyard.
"It's too soon to tell if it was accidental, but it doesn't look like the teenager was shooting at random in the air," Robinson said.
The victim was reportedly in critical condition.
As police investigated the shooting, nearby residents were asked to leave their homes for about an hour.
