For Chandler’s Environmental Education Center, Father’s Day means snakes.
The nature center, at Veterans Oasis Park, 4050 E. Chandler Heights Road, is planning a “Father’s Day Breakfast with the Snakes” at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. For $14 a person, families can enjoy a light breakfast and watch frozen mice being fed to several non-poisonous snakes native to Arizona, said Anne Burkhart, the center’s office manager.
The snakes are on loan from the Arizona Herpetological Association, Burkhart said.
“We do have snakes here that are on display in the building,” she said. “You either like them or you don’t. They’re pretty popular.”
The event is aimed at educating children about snakes and giving them an “experience with nature.”
“You can touch the snakes if you’re interested,” Burkhart said.
The center has had several “mom and me” programs on subjects such as music and art, she said. The snake program was something different for Father’s Day, although mothers and other caregivers are welcome as well, Burkhart said.
Pre-registration is required for all adults and children 3 years and older. Children younger than 3 will be admitted for free. The program can accommodate 40 people, and about half the seats have been filled, Burkhart said.
