A 22-year-old Tempe resident has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with Sunday’s death of a 24-year-old Tempe man found outside Have A Nice Day Cafe.
Tempe Police Sgt. Dan Masters said tips from witnesses led police to arrest Christopher Kaahanui Jr. shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Kevin Johnson, who lived in the 900 block of West Orion Street, was discovered unconscious about 1 a.m. Sunday outside the downtown bar at 410 S. Mill Ave.
He died about noon the same day at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital.
Kaahanui was arrested after a traffic stop at Rural Road and Vista Del Cerro.
"They were total strangers," Masters said. "We believe there was an argument between the two. Mr. Kaahanui punched Mr. Johnson at least, or possibly, just one time."
Detectives were interviewing Kaahanui late Wednesday night at the Tempe City Jail, Masters said. Kaahanui was expected to be booked
into Maricopa County’s Madison Street Jail in Phoenix.
