Tempe police arrested a man Wednesday on suspicion of child molestation after an examination revealed he may have given a sexually transmitted disease to his 8-year-old granddaughter, police said.
Edmund S. Idolor, 57, was arrested at Tempe police headquarters about 4:15 p.m., said police officer Jeff Lane.
The girl complained to her parents of pain while using the bathroom. A doctor who examined her told the parents "she possibly has herpes or a urinary infection," Lane said.
It was not clear in police records whether any laboratory results were available on the girl's condition, Lane said.
According to a police report, the girl told her mother that Idolor had been touching her genitals, and examination suggested the abuse went further.
The girl is one of five children, ages 3 to 11. Lane said Idolor did not live with the family.
"But he is their sole babysitter," Lane said. "So we need to continue with the investigation."
Idolor was booked into Tempe city jail on suspicion of child molestation, a felony, but was later released pending an examination of further laboratory tests.
