SanTan Village, a mammoth-sized mixed-use development near Williams Field Road and the Loop 202 Santan Freeway in Gilbert is five months away from opening its core shopping center component.

The shopping center, expected to attract residents from a 20-mile radius and produce a $7 million annual influx of sales tax revenue for the city, will have two department stores — a Dillard’s and possibly a Macy’s — several first-in-market retailers and restaurants, a 16-screen Harkins movie complex, and a Dick’s Sporting Goods store, among others. The core retail area will open Oct. 26. “This will be the fashion center for Gilbert,” SanTan Village senior property manager Sheila Hunter said.

PLANNING PAYS OFF: The center is the fruit of a long-term plan by Gilbert to bring major shopping amenities to the town.

Town Manager George Pettit said the town is doing everything possible to assist Westcor officials to meet the Oct. 26 deadline. He said town officials are meeting with the developer on a weekly basis and helping field coordination, inspections and other issues.

Pettit said the city has planned its budget around an expected doubledigit jump in sales tax revenue. “It’s exciting,” he said.

BIG OPENING: Pettit said he is expecting a turnout similar to that seen when Chandler Fashion Center opened in 2001. “I think people will respond the same way,” he said. “There will be (a) curiosity factor.”

ON TARGET: SanTan Village senior property manager Sheila Hunter said the pace of construction has been picking up as the project nears its planned completion date. But unforeseen issues always arise in constructing any major project, she said. “There are things that are unfortunately out of your control,” she said. “So far, we’re good.”

JUST THE START: Progress on SanTan won’t stop after it opens in late October. Westcor officials said that opening will bring about 80 percent of the core retail online, with restaurants and “big-box” stores coming later.

ENTERTAINMENT PLAZA: An area for young people with youthoriented retailers and a Harkins Theatres.

CHILDREN’S PLAZA: A childoriented sector with Disney Store, Childrens’ Place, an interactive “pop jet” fountain, and a reading area.

PASEO DRIVE: An area oriented around clothing and apparel shops for adults with stores such as Chico’s, Coach and Victoria’s Secret.

DINING AREA: An area separate from SanTan’s food court. It will have about 10 full-service restaurants that will open in 2008.
