Police say four boys sexually assaulted an 8-year-old girl in a shed near a vacant apartment in Phoenix last week.
All four boys -- ages 9, 10, 13 and 14 -- admitted in interviews with police to planning and being involved in the kidnapping and sexual assault.
The four boys were arrested Tuesday night without incident. Police are recommending one suspect – the 14-year-old – be charged as an adult for the sexual assault and kidnapping of the girl.
The boys each face at least one count of sexual assault. Three of the boys also face one count of kidnapping, police said.
According to information police released Wednesday, the girl was lured by the boys about 5:15 p.m. July 16 to the storage shed near the 2600 block of N. 45th Ave. The boys were offering her chewing gum, police said. At 5:31 p.m., officers responded to an emergency call about a young girl screaming and running partially clothed from the shed. One suspect was caught at the time.
Child Protective Services removed the victim from the custody of her parents. Police reported that the parents blamed the girl for the assault and for bringing shame to the family.
All of the children involved are refugees from Liberia who have resettled in the United States.
