The Arizona State football team needs to boost a fledgling offense, so it comes as no surprise that two-thirds of its 2010 recruiting class is on that side of the ball.

Four-star junior-college offensive tackle Brice Schwab headlines this year’s 26-player class, which will be officially announced Wednesday when players submit their letters of intent.

Scout.com ranks ASU’s class 24th in the nation, and Rivals.com puts the Sun Devils at No. 34.

Rivals.com recruiting analyst Jeremy Crabtree said the Devils put together a solid class despite back-to-back losing season for the first time since 1946-47.

“You would think that would make things a little more difficult,” Crabtree said. “(The recruits) still see the potential in what they could do there. They saw there were struggles, but if they fill a few holes they can be successful.”

Offensive line was a main target, as the Sun Devils are signing six players at that position, half coming from the junior-college ranks.

Schwab, Aderious Simmons and Chris DeArmas, the three junior-college additions, should all compete for playing time next season.

“You don’t recruit juco kids to sit the bench,” Crabtree said.

Wide receiver is another area of need with the departure of Chris McGaha and Kyle Williams. George Bell, another junior-college transfer, is expected to step in and contribute right away.

“You see greatness in him,” Crabtree said.

The Sun Devils aren’t signing any five-star players — as they did with linebacker Vontaze Burfict last season — but it’s a large class that includes five four-star recruits.

In addition to Schwab and Bell, the other four-star recruits are running back Deantre Lewis, tight end Josh Fulton (from St. Mary’s) and defensive end Nduka Onyeali.

East Valley recruits signing with Arizona State in addition to Fulton are Marcos de Niza safety Ramon Abreu and Chandler running back Taylor Walstad.

Saguaro defensive end Jordan McDonald committed to the Sun Devils in mid-December, but will decide on Wednesday whether to follow through with that pledge or switch to Fresno State.

Brophy kicker Alex Garoutte is walking on in the fall before picking up a scholarship in the spring.
