Phoenix police found Serial Shooter suspects Dale Hausner and Samuel Dieteman walking together near the scene of a random shooting May 30 in the West Valley.

The two men were not yet identified as suspects in the string of shootings, and officers at the scene interviewed them as potential witnesses.

Phoenix Sgt. Andy Hill said the men told police they were brothers who were out looking for Hausner's lost cat. They told investigators they had heard a scream and later saw the injured victim.

Hill said Dieteman gave investigators an incorrect home address in Mesa, and Dieteman's name was misspelled in the report.

James Hodge, the 56-year-old victim, suffered injuries in the incident near Camelback Road and Loop 101. But the shooting was not fatal.

Hausner and Dieteman have been charged in a 46-count indictment, which includes the fatal shootings of Mesa resident Robin Blasnek on July 30 and Scottsdale resident Claudia Gutierrez-Cruz on May 2. They were also charged this week with arsons at two Wal-Mart stores in the West Valley.

The men lived together at a Mesa apartment, where police later arrested them on Aug. 4.

Hausner has said Dieteman might have borrowed his car and gone out alone to commit the crimes. But police allege the men traveled together and took turns shooting their victims.

Surveillance cameras inside the burned Wal-Mart stores show the men entering and leaving together. Police also secretly followed Hausner and Dieteman two nights before their arrest, when the men drove together through the streets of

Chandler.

The May 30 shooting occurred at 11:05 p.m. Hill said Hausner and Dieteman flagged down police and were interviewed as witnesses.
