A man drew a handgun and fired three shots into a vehicle leaving a Circle K gas station about 5:40 a.m. Sunday at Southern Avenue and Gilbert Road in Mesa, police said.

Court records show that Cesar Rosales Romero, 20, was in a vehicle at a gas pump when he fired at another vehicle leaving the parking lot. The shots damaged the rear window and rear seat of the victims' vehicle, but neither person in the vehcile was injured.

Police said Romero, a Mesa resident, then drove his vehicle a short distance and attempted to hide it before fleeing on foot with two passengers who were inside the Circle K at the time of the shooting.

Police found Romero walking in the area and arrested him on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm within city limits and criminal damage.

Police found keys to vehicle involved in the shooting inside Romero's pockets. A 9mm automatic pistol was recovered from the vehicle. Romero has a prior arrest on suspicion of marijuana possession.

Court records show that Romero is a legal resident or U.S. citizen.
