Phoenix police say a 17-year-old is dead, a second boy seriously hurt and two other young men in custody after a convenience store theft led to a police shooting, car chase and crash.

Sgt. Andy Hill says in a statement that the incident began just before midnight Friday when two officers in west Phoenix saw several suspects stealing from a store. The officers drove into the parking lot and one chased and caught an 18-year-old who ran from a small sedan. The other got out of his SUV, but the sedan's driver drove at the officer, who fired several shots because he thought he was going to be run over.

The 17-year-old driver sped away, but crashed into a fire hydrant and the car rolled.

The driver died at a local hospital and had two gunshot wounds, but Hill says it isn't clear if he died of injuries in the crash or from the shooting. He's identified as Gonzalo Chalo Cordova.

A 14-year-old boy passenger is hospitalized with serious head injuries and a 17-year-old boy in the car was arrested.
