Participants in Saturday morning's fifth annual Pat's Run charity footrace at Arizona State University and on north Tempe streets are advised to beware of construction-related delays and closures.
Loop 202/Red Mountain Freeway and Loop 101 will be shut in some areas and restricted in others. Also blocked will be major arteries near the campus, such as Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway.
Transportation and city officials say runners can arrive and depart from the race via Metro light rail and the Orbit bus neighborhood circulators. Trains and buses both stop at the Tempe Transportation Center, 200 E. Fifth Street, about a half-mile walk to the race's staging area.
The freeway closures and restrictions, plus recommended detours:
Westbound Loop 202/Red Mountain Freeway closed between Country Club Drive and Loop 101 in north Mesa from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for carpool-lane construction. Detour: Freeway traffic will go north on Country Club, west on McDowell Road and south on Loop 101 to reconnect with westbound Loop 202. Also consider westbound U.S. 60 as an alternate route.
Eastbound Loop 202 narrowed to two lanes between Washington Street and Center Parkway from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for freeway widening. Also closed is eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard access to eastbound Loop 202. Detour: Use alternate routes to exit Sky Harbor International Airport.
Southbound Loop 101 closed in the Scottsdale area between Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Via de Ventura from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for carpool-lane construction. Detour: Traffic exiting at Frank Lloyd Wright will go south on the frontage road, west on Raintree Drive, south on Hayden Road and east on Via de Ventura to reconnect with Loop 101. Also consider southbound State Route 51 to eastbound Loop 202 as an alternate route.
Northbound Loop 101 closed between Baseline Road and Rio Salado Parkway in Tempe from 7:30 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday for carpool-lane construction. Closure will begin after start of Pat's Run. Detour: Northbound traffic can use the freeway frontage road. Due to closure and local utility work along Rio Salado Parkway, drivers leaving ASU can use northbound Rural Road/Scottsdale Road to eastbound Loop 202 to reach Loop 101.
