PHOENIX - An armed man was shot and killed by Phoenix police after officers say he went for a gun in his waistband.

Someone called 911 from a south Phoenix cabinet shop -- on 27th Avenue just south of Broadway -- saying a man they'd been arguing with had pointed a gun at them and pulled the trigger, but the gun didn't fire.

When officers arrived, they found a man with a gun in his waistband.

Police spokesman Bob Ragsdale says officers shouted commands at the man but he refused to obey the commands and instead reached for his gun.

Ragsdale says one officer fired and the man when down. The suspect continued to reach for his waistband even after he was down, says Ragsdale, and that's when several officers fired.
