A 20-year-old Mesa man drove himself to the hospital late Monday night after being shot in the head by a romantic rival of his cousin, Mesa police said.
The victim was driving near Broadway Road and Stapley Drive with two friends when he was chased by a car, said Sgt. Ruben Quesada. Several blocks later, in the 1100 block of East Main Street, a passenger in the car chasing him fired several rounds at the victim's car.
Bullet fragments from a .40 caliber handgun struck the man in the back of the head, Quesada said.
The victim drove himself to Mesa General Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries, Quesada said.
The victim told police he recognized the suspect's car as it had been at his cousin's house in the 100 block of North Stapley Drive earlier in the evening, Quesada said.
The owner of the vehicle, identified as Raul Lopez, 19, had gone to the home to confront the victim's cousin about dating his former girlfriend, Quesada said.
Other people in Lopez's car told police Lopez shot the victim thinking he was the new boyfriend.
Lopez was arrested on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault at his home in the 1200 block of East Jensen Street, Quesada said. He was booked into Maricopa County's Madison Street Jail in Phoenix.
