Firefighters have completely contained a wildfire that cost more than $4.2 million and burned 4,044 acres atop and below the Mogollon Rim, Forest Service officials announced Wednesday.
The Promontory fire at the Tonto and Apache-Sitgreaves forests began May 13 and burned for more than a week, charring ponderosa pine trees and other conifers about 18 miles east of Payson, according to the federal agency’s Southwest Regional Center.
Authorities have said the fire was human-caused. They are still determining the source but believe it may have ignited from an abandoned campfire.
