City crews are back to work to repair utilities at a Mesa intersection that was restricted late last week after a water main leak forced traffic disruptions.

The northbound and southbound lanes on Stapley Drive near Sixth Avenue will remain restricted to one lane each way. The water main repair has been completed but a natural gas line was fixed temporarily to keep the roads open for the weekend.

Final repairs are expected to go on until Wednesday. Motorists are advised to take an alternative route, especially during rush hour, between Monday and Wednesday.

A gas leak investigation led to the city crew inadvertently nicking a six-inch water main pipe on Thursday.

A city spokesman reported there was no need for evacuations and utilities were not disrupted because of the minor gas leak.

If anyone suspects a natural gas leak, they’re advised to call the Utilities Department 24-hour control room at (480) 644-4277 or to call 911.
