Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for the man they believe committed the Baseline Killer serial crimes across the Valley from August 2005 until last summer.
Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced Friday prosecutors notified the court they want capital punishment for the suspect, Mark Goudeau, 42, of Phoenix, if he is found guilty.
Thomas made the decision after considering the conclusions of a capital punishment review panel composed of senior prosecutors in his office.
Citing court rules that govern speedy trials, Thomas said he is urging that the trial begin within 18 months.
Some 136 other death penalty cases remain unresolved in Maricopa County Superior Court.
Phoenix police charged Goudeau on Dec. 7 with all the crimes associated with the Baseline Killer. Goudeau has been charged with 74 counts in connection with the crimes, which include nine slayings, five sexual assaults and 12 armed robberies.
