Main Street was shut down Thursday afternoon after light-rail construction crews broke a natural gas line at 1745 W. Main St.
Mesa police detective Chris Arvayo said the incident happened at 1:35 p.m. and forced the evacuation of a floor and tile shop to the northeast.
Arvayo said dispatchers have received no reports of injury or sickness, but pedestrians in the area complained of a strong odor.
Arvayo said one fire engine and three police officers have responded to the scene.
The incident is separate from two others this morning in Tempe, where workers broke a gas line and severed an electrical line along McClintock Drive.
