The wide, shady sidewalks of downtown Mesa may look darn near deserted in the daytime, but come the second Friday of each month, nightlife grabs a toehold.
The city's "Music On Main" event begins 6 p.m. Friday with a mix of live musical performers stationed up and down West Main Street. At the same time, the district's eclectic mix of art venues, shops and restaurants will open their doors, and artists and crafters will show and sell their creations at an outdoor art market. Classic cars cruise up and down the street - parking from time to time to give strollers an up-close look - and an open-mike contest, open to anyone in attendance, begins 7 p.m. at OneOhOne Gallery.
The strolling street party is a good chance to explore Mesa's historic strip, where home decor and clothing boutiques, a fiber arts store, art galleries, an old blacksmith shop turned jewelry studio, more than 30 outdoor sculptures and other undiscovered gems lurk not far from the street's distinctive colonnade.
Second Fridays take place the second Friday of every month on Main Street just east of Country Club Drive. Each month's event has a different theme.
