The state Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s office is investigating an incident at an east Mesa flooring store that left a man dead Tuesday after he was pinned under a roll of carpet.

The accident happened about 9 a.m. at Ace Flooring, 6350 E. Main St., and killed Jerry Peirce, 56, of Mesa, a business partner of the store, according to Mesa police spokesman Sgt. Ed Wessing. The store is located between Recker and Power roads.

A “closed” sign was placed on the front door of the store as authorities investigated the scene.

The roll of carpet, 10 to 12 feet long, weighed between 800 to 1,000 pounds, Wessing said.

Peirce had been a business partner at the flooring store with Patrick Venjohn for 15 years, Wessing said,

Bill Wright, spokesman for OSHA’s office in Phoenix, said Tuesday that the two compliance officers are investigating the accident to see if there were any violations of OSHA’s general industry standards.

A flooring or carpet store falls under general industry standards, according to Wright. The investigation into Tuesday’s death should take two to four months to complete, he said.
