A man getting money from an ATM on Wednesday in Chandler was stabbed after he refused to give his cash to a knife-wielding robber, police said.

The victim was at an ATM at 3:55 p.m. outside Chase Bank at Gilbert and Riggs roads and took the money from the cash machine and was returning to his vehicle, Chandler police spokesman Sgt. Rick Griner said.

One suspect carrying a utility knife came up from behind him and demanded he hand over the money, Griner said. When the victim refused, he was stabbed in the arm. The person who stabbed him and another suspect then fled in a white van that had been stolen from the Gila River Indian Community, Griner said.

Authorities eventually tracked the two suspects to the reservation, where they were arrested.

Their names were not available and police were working Thursday afternoon to have them extradited from the reservation, Griner said.

They could face charges of attempted armed robbery and aggravated assault.

The victim was treated and released from a local hospital.
