A man accused of fatally shooting a Gilbert police officer was arraigned Wednesday in Maricopa County Superior Court via closed circuit video as he lay on a stretcher in Maricopa County Jail.
Court Commissioner Brian Rees entered not guilty pleas on behalf of Christopher Redondo of Globe, who was charged with first-degree murder, four counts of drive-by shooting and 19 counts of aggravated assault, according to court records.
Redondo, 35, is accused of shooting Lt. Eric Shuhandler in the head during a traffic stop near Val Vista and Baseline roads on Jan. 28 before leading about 50 officers from numerous jurisdictions on a 50-mile high-speed chase along U.S. 60. Redondo and his passenger, Daimen Irizarry, shot and threw objects at pursuing cruisers but were shot and injured near Superior after stopping their truck, jumping out and shooting at officers.
Irizarry, 30, of Gilbert, was charged with four counts of drive-by shooting, nine counts of aggravated assault and unlawful flight from law enforcement.
He is scheduled to be arraigned on March 3, according to court records, and remains hospitalized.
