Hollywood casting directors will soon size up the East Valley in a search for overweight Arizonans to star in NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.”
A casting call for Season 7 of the reality weight-loss show is slated for July 19 at Superstition Springs Center in Mesa. The series challenges contestants to lose weight through diet and exercise for a $250,000 grand prize.
Casting directors will be on the lookout for individuals, teams of two and families of three with outgoing, charismatic personalities. The first 500 people in line are guaranteed to be seen.
“We’re unlocking our doors at 6 a.m.,” says Melissa Buxton, spokeswoman for the mall. “We had over 700 people show up last time we did this, in March.”
The show’s casting experts will interview 7 to 10 contestants at a time in group interviews that last about 10 minutes. They’ll be looking for weight-loss competitors who stand out from the crowd.
An area will be roped off for people to wait in line, and the mall will supply coupons and other offers to contestants and their companions, many of whom are expected to stay all day to provide support.
Buxton says the spring casting, which was for Season 6, attracted contestants from out of state.
The show’s latest winner, 32-year-old Ali Vincent, was working as a hairdresser in Mesa when she was cast alongside her mother, Bette-Sue Burkland. The mother-daughter team was voted off in the fourth episode, but Vincent was invited back on the show in a surprise twist and went on to become the first woman ever to win the competition. She lost 112 pounds — nearly 48 percent of her body weight. Vincent started the season at 234 pounds.
You must be 18 years old and a legal U.S. citizen to try out for the show. If selected, participation is all-expenses paid.
