Santa is scheduled to arrive at 10 a.m. Friday at Scottsdale Fashion Square, Camelback and Scottsdale roads, and Paradise Valley Mall, Cactus Road and Tatum Boulevard.
At Paradise Valley Mall, the big man in red gets a brand-new home - in a 30-foot-tall boot.
The famous poinsettia tree at Biltmore Fashion Park, 24th Street and Camelback Road in Phoenix, also makes its debut Friday.
Mrs. Claus will stop by the Borgata, the shopping center at Scottsdale Road and Rose Lane, around 5 p.m. Saturday to decorate cookies, and Santa will show up just to plug in the tree lights.
All the holiday decor and doings are, of course, aimed at encouraging you to shop.
Regardless of which winter holidays, if any, you celebrate, if you are a bargain hunter, your big day is just a week away.
The day after Thanksgiving is dubbed Black Friday because, according to tradition, so many people hit the shops that day that retailers' bottom lines turn from red to black.
It may not happen this year, but not for lack of deals. In fact, most retailers have been discounting for weeks just to get cash-strapped consumers to loosen their purse strings.
But Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation said retailers will be trying to squeeze out even more bargains for the start of the big shopping season.
And this year, you don't even have to set your alarm to be first in the door for the famous Black Friday "doorbusters." Just sneak in a nap after consuming all that turkey and trimmings and then head for the malls before going to bed.
The Disney Store at Scottsdale Fashion Square opens at midnight. The store will be discounting all day, but there will be extreme deals in the early-morning hours, according to the retailer.
KB Toys at Paradise Valley Mall opens at 5 a.m., but if you don't mind a short drive south, you can shop KB at midnight, too. The KB stores at Arizona Mills Mall, Baseline Road and Interstate 10 in Tempe, and Fiesta Mall, Alma School Road and Southern Avenue in Mesa, will open at the witching hour.
Nearly every other shop and shopping center will open sometime before dawn. Here's a sampling:
JCPenney will open at 4 a.m. and Sears at 5 a.m. at Paradise Valley Mall.
Macy's will open at 5 a.m. at all malls.
At Kierland Commons, most stores will stay shut until 10 a.m., but Guess will start ringing up sales at6 a.m.
