Following a delay, the owner of a Famous Dave’s Legendary Pit Bar-B-Que is gearing up to open April 12 at Gilbert’s SanTan Village, and he plans to hire 130 workers. John Erlandson, managing partner of the chain’s owner, Desert Ribs LLC, said plans were put on hold for about a year due to the poor economy.

Erlandson said the restaurant, the company’s fourth location in the Valley, will begin job interviews at 1 p.m. Tuesday in a suite located next door to the restaurant. SanTan Village is at Williams Field Road and the Santan Freeway stretch of Loop 202.

“Everything’s just been so dry as far as new businesses opening, I’m guessing that we’ll probably have a pretty good response on Tuesday. And there very well could be a line right down the block,” he said.

The last Famous Dave’s opened at Mesa Riverview in November 2007 at Dobson Road and the Red Mountain Freeway stretch of Loop 202 in Mesa.

Erlandson said he has plans to open additional restaurants in the north East Valley, far West Valley and central Phoenix.

Sheila Hunter, SanTan’s senior marketing manager, said mall patrons have been inquiring about the restaurant for the past year.

“They come to the office, they call, and they go to guest services every day asking when they’re going to open,” she said.

“A lot of the winter visitors love Famous Dave’s,” she added. “Since they got here in October, they’ve been asking.”

Positions at the new restaurant include line and prep cooks, dishwashers, servers, bartenders, hosts and takeout staff.
