The Internal Revenue Service is searching for volunteers to help people prepare their taxes through two local programs.

The department needs residents to volunteer for either the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program or the Tax Counseling for the Elderly, or TCE, program during the upcoming tax season. Both programs are free and are meant to help people with low to moderate incomes, senior citizens, people with disabilities, people with limited English proficiency and others in need of assistance.

Volunteers will receive specialized training to work with tax forms or can volunteer in other ways by working as greeters, translators, or by overseeing the workflow of customers and other volunteers.

Training begins in December, and potential volunteers can learn more about the programs by emailing the Tax Volunteer Program at taxvolunteer@irs.gov, visiting irs.gov or calling (800) 829-1040.
