Just a mile from the Mesa location for the Chicago Cubs new spring training facility, another Windy City mainstay is set to open: Portillo’s. The restaurant that specializes in Chicago hot dogs and Italian beef will open a 7,000-square foot eatery in the summer of 2013 at Tempe Marketplace.

Vestar, owner of Tempe Marketplace, announced it has sold a 2.38-acre parcel on its southwest corner to Portillo’s.

“We have few restaurant sites at the bustling Tempe Marketplace left and it’s hard to imagine a better fit for one of those spots than Portillo’s,” David Malin, Vestar’s director of acquisitions and development, said in a news release. “Whether you’re a Chicago native living in the Phoenix metropolitan area, a visitor from the Midwest or just someone who loves great food done right, you’ll feel right at home at Portillo’s.”

Portillo’s menu includes a variety of items, such as Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef, hamburgers, sandwiches and desserts.

Chicago transplants rave about this chain but many locals will see the name "Portillo's" and think it's another Mexican food joint.
