Tempe’s YMCA branch is one of four in the Valley set to get solar panels next year in an effort to reduce energy costs. The panels are projected to reduce electric use by 21 percent at the Tempe location. The panels are manufactured by German-based Centrosolar America, which has a U.S. office in Scottsdale.
The YMCA will not pay any up-front costs. It will lease the panels from Scout Solar, a Tempe-based firm that will own the panels and hold rebates generated through Arizona’s incentive programs. According to Scout Solar, the YMCA’s lease payments will be smaller than what it had been paying for electricity. The panels at all four YMCAs will generate the equivalent of the energy to power 48 households. The panels are scheduled to be installed by March.
