Tempe Community Council's Financial Stability Initiative offers a free tax preparation site and help with Earned Income Tax Credit refunds for families who qualify.

The service is available Saturdays, Jan. 28 through April 14, from 9 a.m. to noon (except March 10 and 17) and Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m. in February at Tempe Schools Credit Union, 2800 S. Mill Ave.

Trained volunteer tax preprarers, certified by the Internal Revenue Service, provide free tax preparation and electronic filing for individuals earning $35,000 or less per year and couples making $55,000 or less per year. With electronic filing and direct deposit, taxpayers can expect refunds in three to four working days.

This site has Spanish translators and is accessible for people with disabilities.

Taxpayers must bring a host of items and information with them to the preparation site, and spouses filing joint returns must both be present; all necessary information to bring can be found online at www.tempe.gov/tcc/FinancialStability.
