Tempe and Mesa are pegged to get two of Arizona’s first three Glamour Secrets stores. The Canadian-based professional beauty supply store chain plans to blanket the state with 30 to 40 stores in the next five years, said Alan Hatch, area developer for Arizona.
The company has no signed sites yet but is “negotiating seriously” for space in Dana Park, the high-end, open-air shopping center at Baseline Road and Val Vista Drive on the Mesa-Gilbert border, Arizona Mills mall in Tempe, and Metrocenter in Phoenix, Hatch said.
Glamour S ecrets, an eighteen-year-old chain, has 60 Canadian locations and a handful of U.S. versions in New York and California.
Systemwide sales in 2005 topped $40 million, Hatch said.
The stores sell to the public, but the products and brands are those used by hair and nail salons or day spas, he said.
Glamour Secrets differs from other beauty supply stores because of the vast variety of brands and the sales staff of licensed cosmetologists who can advise shoppers on the best products for their individual needs, Hatch said.
“We carry brands such as Redken, OPI, Biolage, Paul Mitchell — 300 brands and 4,000 to 5,000 different items, as well as professional blow dryers, curling irons and other supplies,” he said.
Each store also houses a small full-service salon for those who want to buy a pro’s services as well as pro products.
“We targeted Arizona because it is a fast-growing state and a sun state with a lot of people exposed to the weather. That provides a better market for our products,” Hatch said.
