If you haven’t heard by now, cooler air mixes better with fuel to provide more horsepower and torque.

If you haven’t heard by now, cooler air mixes better with fuel to provide more horsepower and torque. While that big, round open-element air cleaner under the hood looks sharp, all it’s doing is sucking up the hot air under the hood.

Instead, consider plumbing in cooler outside air with the help of Spectre Performance’s Low Profile Plenum hat that fits atop most carburetors and retrofit fuel-injection throttle bodies. Spectre claims the product will fit under just about any hood and due to its unique “bell mouth base” actually increases flow despite its low profile.

Once installed, all you have to do is remote-mount a cone-style high-flow filter (preferably where cool air is available) and run piping/hose to it. The Low Profile Plenum retails for about $100 and comes in single- and dual-inlet designs. See more at www.spectreperformance.com or call the California company at 800-821-4868.
