When is “dirty money” a good thing? When the business that hosts the annual Tough Mudder event in east Mesa gives a hefty chunk of the proceeds to Mesa United Way.

A year ago, DMB Associates Inc., which owns the former General Motors Proving Ground near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in east Mesa, handed Mesa United Way a $15,000 check after hosting the popular competition. This week, DMB Senior Vice President Dea McDonald, who serves on Mesa United Way’s Board of Directors, announced the 2013 donation would jump to $25,000 — propelling Mesa United Way’s 2012-13 pledge campaign past the $2 million mark, to $2,088,824. The campaign goal is $2,825,000.

Tough Mudder events are held around the world and are billed as “hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test all around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie.” Tough Mudder has raised more than $5 million for the Wounded Warrior Project. The Mesa event was Feb. 23-24.
