East Valley drivers saw a bit of a break at the pump, as prices were down an average 5.5 cents Thursday over the previous week, according to AAA Arizona.

Drivers in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Tempe and Ahwatukee Foothills were paying $3.532 per gallon on average. While that's down over the previous week, it's still up 6.2 cents from a month ago.

The up and down swings may be previewing what's to come, AAA Arizona reports.

“August will likely be a volatile month for fuel prices,” said Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona. “High crude prices, the possibility of refinery glitches or supply disruptions from Gulf Coast hurricanes and an end of summer spike in demand could push prices higher this month.”

Arizona fuel prices shed nearly 3 cents to $3.549 per gallon. Nationally, prices dropped 2.5 cents to $3.630 per gallon.

The statewide average price of gas in July was $3.513 per gallon, which is the second-highest average on record for the month. By comparison, the average was $4.029 per gallon in July 2008.

Tucson and Flagstaff hold the low and high state fuel averages at $3.392 and $3.749 per gallon, respectively. South Carolina and Connecticut hold the lowest and highest average prices for the lower 48 states at $3.300 and $4.006 per gallon, respectively.
