East Valley inns and their eateries picked up a few more diamonds this year than last. Mobil Travel Guides continue to snub posh Scottsdale resorts when doling out stars, but AAA has bestowed the top-tier five-diamond rating on five Arizona hotels — all in the Scottsdale area — and four restaurants, one each in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tucson, and the newest, Kai, at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort on the Gila River Indian Community.

“Four and five diamonds represent the best of the best, and the five-diamond (designation) is really significant. Less than a quarter of a percent of the properties get five,” said Linda Gorman, AAA Arizona pokeswoman. “Scottsdale (area) has more than Chicago, Las Vegas and Miami. The state of Arizona, and Scottsdale in particular, has really risen to world-class status.”

And Camelback Inn has earned a full five gems every year since the awards began 31 years ago, Gorman said.

Arizona also picked up three new four diamond restaurants, all of them in the East Valley, and five new four-diamond hotels.
