The Bistro at Kokopelli Winery will close on May 26, with plans to re-open in September as Crust.
“We were new, fun and different in 2001, and we want to be fun in the future. So, we will be undergoing dramatic reconstruction and re-concepting over the summer months,” reads a statement in The Bistro’s May 5 email newsletter to customers.
Owners of The Bistro could not be reached by phone, but their email reads that customers “will still be able to taste, drink and buy Kokopelli Wine to take with you or to ship from this location and soon from sites in Scottsdale and North Phoenix. Crust will also retain a few of our special menu items.”
Crust restaurants, headed by East Coast natives Mike Merendino, Ryan Mitchell and Duke Hornia, already have locations in Scottsdale and North Phoenix, and at Phoenix Convention Center and Salt River Fields. Hornia, a sommelier, has crafted an eclectic wine list for the chain’s existing locations. The menu of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes and pizzas includes selections like filet mignon sliders ($12.95), Caprese salad ($8.50), crusted mac and cheese ($8.95) and shrimp scampi ($16.95).
Open for a dozen years in the historic bank building at Boston Street and San Marcos Place in Chandler, Kokopelli’s Bistro has been home to regular live music and annual grape-stomping events.
“We’ve been a part of your first dates, engagements, showers, rehearsal dinners, weddings, children, anniversaries and birthdays. We have enjoyed sharing these events with you and inviting you to ours, like the Kokopelli Krush, Barrel Tastings, Latin Rhythms, and even having Elvis in the house. But after all these years it is time for a change,” reads Kokopelli’s message to customers.
“Kokopelli Winery will remain a part of historic downtown Chandler now and in the years to come.”
