Orbital Science Corp.’s Launch Systems Group in Chandler will have an employment open house Saturday in an effort to fill about 100 engineering and other technical jobs available at the space firm.

The event will take place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3380 S. Price Road, Chandler.

Salaries of the new positions will range from $60,000 to $110,000 annually, the company said.

The new jobs are being created as the result of nearly $1 billion worth of new contracts the company has won in the past two years, said spokesman Barry Beneski.

Orbital already employs more than 1,000 engineers, scientists and administrative personnel at the Chandler plant, which is almost double the size of the Chandler work force three years ago, he said.

The Chandler operations are focused on developing and building launch vehicles used by the U.S. military, NASA and commercial customers.

Beneski said the biggest driver in Chandler’s growth has been the company’s participation in developing the national missile defense system, which has been accelerated by President Bush in the past few years.

The system is designed to intercept and destroy incoming nuclear missiles that enemies of the United States might launch against the nation.

Among the projects being undertaken by Orbital in Chandler are:

• A ground-based midcourse defense system for The Boeing Co. as part of the missile defense system;

• Kinetic energy interceptors as part of a team headed by Northrop Grumman and Raytheon, also missile defense project;

• Ballistic and high-speed cruise missile target rockets that are used to test most of the country’s major missile defense rockets; and

• The Pegasus, Taurus and Minotaur rockets used to launch science, communications and other satellites.
