Education: Bachelor of Arts, University of Arkansas. Full Golf Scholarship
Current Job: Director of Builder Development, State Mortgage
How did you get into the industry?
You could say I was discovered in 1999 when my current boss, Roy Meshel, recruited me. Playing professional golf did not work out as planned and Roy offered me a job with his company in exchange for free golf lessons. Let’s just say his training benefited me more than my golf lessons did him.
What are your main duties?
My duties include developing partnerships with local homebuilders and developers. I set up and manage dedicated mortgage teams and constantly monitor customer service. I also create exciting loan programs our homebuilders and developers can use to help sell more units.
What skills/education are needed to enter your field?
Arizona has not mandated loan officers to be individually licensed; a college degree is not required. However, I do not recommend people just jump in. The industry is competitive. You need to be customer service driven, must be extremely self-motivated and able to accept rejection.
Any advice for job seekers?
My biggest advice is to have 3 months of savings before getting in. Also research the company before jumping aboard. In the last several years mortgage companies were popping up all over the Valley. With the change in the market some of these companies are now closing their doors.
Why someone should consider this field:
The field is fast paced and great for self-motivated individuals with strong communication skills, the ability to work with numbers and a willingness to work hard.
