Job title: Aviation Communications Dispatcher, City of Phoenix Aviation Department, 4 years; Education: The Aviation Department provides extensive training and education for the dispatcher training lasting over three months.

What are your main duties?

“I work in the heart of the airport. All police, fire and operations personnel and services are dispatched from the communications center. If someone at the airport needs the police or has a medical emergency, I answer those calls and get help to them right away. This position rotates duties so some days I answer questions from the public who call the airport. I also monitor the airport’s fire alarm, access control, covert alarm systems, and closed circuit television systems.”

What do you like best?

“I like helping passengers and I love the people I work with, it is a team environment. Everyday is different. I like responding and managing medical calls because it is my responsibility to make sure that fi re, police, operations are dispatched immediately and those who are with the person with the medical emergency know what to do. I help to ensure their safety.”

What skills and education are needed to enter your field?

The level of education varies, anything from high-school to college. Being able to multi-task is a huge part of this job. You have to make decisions under sometimes stressful and hectic situations. And of course, customer service skills are extremely important because you communicate with the public daily.
